Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

For our preliminary task we spent about five minutes on our story board. In contrast, we spent several lessons planning our storyboard for our thriller. We filmed approximately 50 seconds of footage and cut it down to 13 seconds. In contrast we filmed roughly 40 minutes of footage and cut it down to approximately 2 minutes. Therefore the editing process was significantly longer for the thriller and took us about two weeks to complete as opposed to the preliminary task which took us around a week to complete. Also the differences in complexity of shots are obvious; the thriller being more complex. For example, the preliminary task only consisted of a few closeups and wide shots; the thriller on the other hand had many different types of POV shots, cross cutting, high angle and low angle shots and establishing shots. The ending consists of our actor being in the same shot; this required a considerable amount of editing. We discovered we were more familiar with the equipment as we used the editing program effectively for necessities such as sound; something we could not have done for the preliminary task because we were not as experienced. We used and edited in sounds from soundtrack pro. We used sound in order to create tension which gave our thriller an edge. Our thriller depicted the victim and the attacker as the same person; therefore we had to decide how to depict to the audience that Dan were two ‘different’ people. We decided to dress Dan as the attacker in a hoody, give him a different pace and dynamic of walking and a knife. In contrast, we dressed Dan as the victim without the hoody and covered him with blood; we believe that this successfully gave the illusion that Dan was two separate people. We managed to portray Dan as the victim and attacker in the same shot by creating a mask by which we drew a virtual line between the two shots of Dan in the same frame; the finished shot looked surprisingly realistic.
