Copright Letter to Label

To the copyright holder

We are a group of A Level students working on an A Level project for a qualification in Media Studies. We are writing to request permission to use the following track as part of this project:

'Crazy in Love' by The Puppini Sisters

With your permission the track would be used as the accompaniment to a short form video that is made purely for assessment purposes and will have no commercial usage. The video will be viewed only by members of the school community and the assessor of the examination board.

The artist and the copyright holder will of course be fully recognised in the pre-production and evaluation material that accompanies the project. We can also include a full copyright notice if required both in the planning material and on the video itself.

Yours sincerely Charlotte Clark

Storyboard

We established the narrative and performance aspects of our ‘Crazy in Love' music video. We decided that the narrative would revolve around three female jazz singers who have committed a number of murders as they were ‘crazy in love’. The performance elements are a combination of a jazz club and prison location. There are additional narrative establishing shots of the murder scenes and the girl’s mug shots. We decided to incorporate a dance break in the instrumental section of the track.

The storyboard includes: drawings, locations, action, movement/type, sound, editing and timeline.

Our storyboar4ding was so organised that it allowed us to make changes in ur ideas. We decided to cut exterior night time shots as we felt it did not link to the narrative and therefore it was irrelevant.

We filmed each storyboard shot drawing individually and transferred the footage to final cut pro. We uploaded the track and fitted the images to the music timeline. After completing this, we realised that it was not cut completely in time with the music and that the pace was too slow. We decided to make the cuts shorter and have more editing transitions.

Here are some examples of the storyboard:

Chosen cover track

We have chosen to use The Puppini Sisters cover of Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love'. We decided to make a music video for this cover because we wanted to appeal to a wide audience. The Puppini Sisters style and image appeals to an older audience and the song will appeal to younger audiences because it is an original song of Beyonce.

Artist Profile

'Hunky Dory' is a trio of three girls. They specialize in 1940s style vocal music and their performances are burlesque themed.

Our Target Audience

Our Record Label

Institutional Context

Two of the members of 'Hunky Dory', worked in a vintage charity shop in London. They decided to form a trio with one of the member's sister, who had previously struggled singing solo on the jazz circuit in grotty unsuccessful clubs. The group became a successful cappella, pop, jazz, Close Harmony, Swing group. The group has been performing for roughly two years together and have attracted a niche audience. Since forming the group, their image has matured and become more sophisticated. They have always had an original style inspired by 40’s vintage fashion but it has become more glamorous over time. They have a sex appeal through thier cheeky burlesque style. 'Hunky Dory' will never have a mainstream audience but their original niche audience may grow through word of mouth. A way they will manage this is by singing covers of mainstream songs, such as Beyonce’s 'Crazy in Love'.

Hunky Dory are inspired by female singers who performed around the time of World War II (1939-1945), such as: The Andrews sisters, Vera Lyn and Judy Garland. They are also inspired by style icons such as pin up girls and Burlesque dancers. Their modern day competitors would be similar groups such as The Puppini Sisters. The old fashioned, sophisticated, glamorous style of their genre matches their image and makes them stand out in comparison to current successful music artists. The commercial implications that Hunky Dory has is their style of music, which does not appeal to mainstream audiences. They have a very individual sound which is not typical of what you would hear in the charts.

Hunky Dory are signed to a small record label, Universal Classics and Jazz (UK) which targets a niche audience, therefore a unique image. Other acts signed to this label are artists such as The Puppini Sisters. The record label constructs Hunky Dory’s image to make them more sellable by portraying them as glamorous and sophisticated.

Hunky Dory appeal to the demographic of upper middle class and have a strong female fan base. However, their sex appeal may also attract a male audience. The typical fan would visit art galleries, vintage boutiques, stores and may possibly be a fan of Portobello market. They would be interested in British culture and the World War II era as well as this eras fashion. Hunky Dory fans would listen to music in the same genre and close genres such as; swing, jazz, classical and pop. They would listen to music from the same era that inspired the music of Hunky Dory. Again a typical fan might watch media product from the World War II era, as well as current day media product that replicates this same era.

Intial Ideas

Within our production group we discussed our potential music video ideas that we had came up with over the summer. All the ideas were of good quality and all were possibilities. We decided that we would create a product that had all of our input. Therefore, we decided to create a new music video concept. As a group, we decided to do an unfamiliar genre doing something different, would be beneficial. We decided to go with Laura’s idea. The idea was to a song originally by Beyonce that had been covered by The Pupinni Sisters. Their genre of music appeals to a mainly upper class, older audience as it is swing/jazz style. We wanted genre that people would not instantly think of. The Pupinni Sisters have an old-fashioned, feminine touch and we saw potential to create a video that would be diverse and individual that would appeal to a niche audience. As a group we researched The Pupinni sisters and listened to other tracks they had done. We chose a track called “Crazy in Love” which is a cover of Beyonce’s original. We thought that this well known song would be a good choice due to its tempo but mostly due to the fact that it will attract attention as it is a cover of a mainstream song. We choose to call our group “Hunky Dory” that consists of three female singers, Sabrina Salmon, Karis Arghiros and Nikola Duckert. Our initial idea was a very fast process and we feel that we have worked well together and will end up with a impressive result.

Choice of institution

We would like to have an institution from America to make our movie, so that we would be supported with a lot of money. Time Warner has the type of financial backing to make our movie and to help us distribute the movie as effectively as possible. For our production we wanted to use ‘Evolution Entertainment’ and ‘Lions Gate’ as they worked with movies such as ‘Saw’ and ‘American Psycho’ which reflects the type of film we want to make. They were also successfully marketed and have the same films as our horror/thriller. Therefore these films had the same target audience as our film, which leads us to think that we are making the right choice of Production Company.

First production meeting

When we had our first production group meeting we finalized the key ideas for our production. We decided which idea for the horror/thriller we were going to use. We decided to use the main them of Victor’s idea. It takes place in a forest where a victim is running away from an attacker.

Team
Producer: Charlotte ClarkCinematographer: Sophie EvansSound Engineer: Adam LeonDirector: Victor Stromberg
We discussed what we were going to include in the sequence. We decided our title would appear with a slash effect of light disrupting the final blackout. We proceeded to discuss all the necessary equipment to carry out our sequence.

Our target audience
Our target audience range between 18 and 24 as it is this age group which has the highest ratio of horror movie goers. We wanted particularly to attract a male audience as mostly men watch horror movies. We wanted to attract the type of audience who enjoyed films such as: Saw, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Psycho and American Psycho. We wanted the audience to question if what they were watching was possible and could happen in the real life.

Introduction to stills camera (brief account of our lesson)

A camera captures light which then goes onto a photographic film which creates a picture. To create a quality picture we had to consider hotspots, zoom, focus, angle and lighting. For hotspots we followed the rule of thirds so that there’s not an empty space within the frame which makes the picture appear badly shot. While using a tool such as focus, we can also create a multiple layered picture were something behind something else in the picture is in focus so that it draws the attention of the eye. We could also use angle to give an object a level of status; a low level shot could give the impression of high status and a high angle shot could give us the impression that we are of superior status to the object. Lighting can create the mood and atmosphere of the shot. For example, soft lighting can create a more fragile atmosphere and make the actor/actress look more beautiful.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

For our preliminary task we spent about five minutes on our story board. In contrast, we spent several lessons planning our storyboard for our thriller. We filmed approximately 50 seconds of footage and cut it down to 13 seconds. In contrast we filmed roughly 40 minutes of footage and cut it down to approximately 2 minutes. Therefore the editing process was significantly longer for the thriller and took us about two weeks to complete as opposed to the preliminary task which took us around a week to complete. Also the differences in complexity of shots are obvious; the thriller being more complex. For example, the preliminary task only consisted of a few closeups and wide shots; the thriller on the other hand had many different types of POV shots, cross cutting, high angle and low angle shots and establishing shots. The ending consists of our actor being in the same shot; this required a considerable amount of editing. We discovered we were more familiar with the equipment as we used the editing program effectively for necessities such as sound; something we could not have done for the preliminary task because we were not as experienced. We used and edited in sounds from soundtrack pro. We used sound in order to create tension which gave our thriller an edge. Our thriller depicted the victim and the attacker as the same person; therefore we had to decide how to depict to the audience that Dan were two ‘different’ people. We decided to dress Dan as the attacker in a hoody, give him a different pace and dynamic of walking and a knife. In contrast, we dressed Dan as the victim without the hoody and covered him with blood; we believe that this successfully gave the illusion that Dan was two separate people. We managed to portray Dan as the victim and attacker in the same shot by creating a mask by which we drew a virtual line between the two shots of Dan in the same frame; the finished shot looked surprisingly realistic.

Task 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Task 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our target audience member a male between the ages 15-18. This would mean that they possibly would not have a great amount of money to spend but would be possibly willing to go to the cinema or/and by a DVD.
The audience member would enjoy thrillers and would probably listen to rock or heavy metal. We would also have female character's in our film which would also attract a male audiance because of sex appeal. We have a tense opening sequence whre someone gets killed becuase it would entice the audiance to want to know why he died. Our target audience member should be educated to some extent to undcerstand the slightly scientific storyline of the film.

Task 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?

The media institution that we used to distribute our thriller Doppelganger is Lionsgate. Lionsgate produces both small and big budget movies and are well recognised. Lionsgate has produced films such as Harry Brown (2009) 300 (2006) and American Psycho (2000). Lionsgate films usually contain the themes of murder, action and an intricate plot; all of the themes of which appear in our opening sequence. We were unsure on how sucessful our thriller would be so Lionsgate was an obvious choice. We thought that Lionsgate would be interested in Doppleganger as it correlates with it's production values, budget and themes. Lionsgate would also be a great marketing tool for our thriller because it is a widely recognised company which would intice the public to watch our thriller.

Task 2 How does your product represent particular social groups?

The killer in our thriller wears a hoody and stabbed the victim with a knife. This relates heavily to the problem of knife crime in the UK. The killer is also a representative of Britainsn youth culture; many teenagers today are involved in gang violence qwear hoody's and carry knifes. Youth culture is also portrayed negatively in films such as Kiidulthood (2006), Bullet Boy (2004) and Adulthood (2008). The other subgroup featured in our thriller is that of the victim. Our victim is also a teenager, however he is not shown wezaring a hoody; this is to apeal to the wider audience of Mother's etc. who will feel strong sympasthy toward's a child. The idea that the victim and the attacker are the same person initates a fear in the audience of themsleves because they become aware that they are capable of such a terrible crime; this will ask the audience to consider taking action against crime in the UK. The killer/victim ultimately symbolises our fear of our own actions and their consequences.

Task 1 - In what ways does youer media product use, develop or challange forms and conventions of real media prooducts?

Our thriller is very classic as the sequence consists of a chaase sequence after a stabbing. The thriller ends with the victim and the attacker face to face and it is revealed that the attacker is the same person. We took the stereotype of a victim being chased by an unknown phycho then inveteted this convention by making the attacker a doppelganger of the victim; this challanges the convention of phyco killer. Our sequence's inspiration was from The Tenant (1976), Saw Franchise and Scream (1996). The key inspiration was from The Tenant as it is also revealed that the killer is himself. Therefore, we used this idea to give our thriller an unexpected twist, which is not typical in horror/thriller's today.

Post Production

Since the preliminary task the group has learnt a great deal about the filming and editing process; particularly the editing process. When we began editing during the preliminary task, our group was uncertain as to how to go about the whole process. However, through trial an error, we managed to use the program to its full effectiveness. When we filmed the preliminary task, it was extremely basic as we only used one location for filming. In comparison our thriller was filmed outdoors in a large location with difficult terrain and we used a significantly greater number of shots. This effected how long we spent on our editing significantly and we used a greater number of tools on the program to aid our editing; therefore we learnt a great deal. The preliminary task in comparison consisted of slower cuts as the pace and mood was much slower paced. The thriller in contrast is more erratic and frantic in pace to symbolize the victims panic; this creates dramatic tension. During the post production process, we cut several clips that we thought didn’t benefit the sequence. We found that there was a considerable amount of film that we didn’t need thought the editing process. Our film is a chase sequence, so cutting down a lot of material was necessary as the film would have been too long which would lose the tension and attention of the audience. We filmed approximately forty minutes of footage. There were many great shots that we had to cut out as a result to reduce the sequence to three minutes; however we believe that we chose the best and necessary shots and ended up with a tense and fantastic opening sequence. We used a combination of diegetic and non-diegetic sound. We used the diegetic sound of Dan rustling through the bushes and the sound of his panting. We used non-diegetic sound from soundtrack pros range of sound clips and tracks. The sound track we chose sounds like an electric organ; we believe it successfully builds tension throughout the sequence. We combined this sound track with the sound of leaves rustling as Dan walks/runs, Dan panting as he runs and the sound of wind between the shots of the victim and attacker; the overall effect is an exciting and tense atmosphere. Lionsgate, the distributor company appears first as it is the biggest influence on the film because the film could not have been made without the distributor’s financial help. The production company appears next because it has the next biggest influence on the film in terms of finance. The pace of the titles is one second because it is long enough to read them and satisfy the company but not to slow down the pace of the sequence.

Account of the shooting day

We were not sure exactly how we were going to execute the film. However we came up with a clear plan as soon as we investigated the terrain of the location. We compared our shots to our storyboard; they were not completely the same but it was very similar; the only thing that was different was the ending. The main shot choices that we used were fast tracking shots and close ups. The main tracking shots we had were towards the beginning of the film. We follow the victim running through the forest. The close up is scene at the end in which the attacker is about to stab the victim. The final shot was a POV which shows the camera running through the woods as if the victim is running away from the attacker. This was the hardest shot to take as there was twigs, obstacles etc. in our path which kept tripping us up. We were lucky in the fact we go to school in a heavily forested area of Surrey, we filmed in a nearby woodland area; therefore we walked, saving money traveling by walking. We had chosen a great location as we were on a hill which received a lot of light and we didn’t come across the public, so it was very easy to film. We chose a deserted forest because it is a primary fear as it is dark and sinister and vast majorities have fears of woods being haunted etc.Our actor had a lost of experience working with cameras which was extremely lucky. We used a large amount of fake blood which was used to full effect as Dan put a large amount in his mouth, spat it out, to make it look as if he was suffering from internal bleeding. We also applied a large amount to his stomach to make it look as if he had been stabbed. We used natural lighting which made the film seem more real. The whole film is about instinct which is something which occurs naturally, so we thought adding light to the film would be hypocritical to our idea. We did not film sound on the day; we added sound in the editing process. My role on the day was very important as I was the Producer. I had to make sure that everything was planned and all our arrangements for equipment etc. had been meet. I also helped with camera work and filmed several sequences. We got on well as a team which made it easy to work together; this enabled us to give each other ideas on what to do on the day with the camera and how we could film it. For example, I came up with the idea to shoot the attacker wearing a hoody walking towards Victor. Before we decided on the ending, we were originally going to have a POV shot of the victim being stabbed by the attacker (himself). However, Victor wore a hoody and Dan also wore a hoody so that it looked like the attacker is about to stab the victim again. We then got Dan to pull down his hood to reveal that he was the attacker all along. During the editing phase we cut to the titles when the audience realizes that the attacker and victim is the same person.

Final Discussion of the Effectiveness of the Pre Production

The ideas we came up with as a team were very creative. The idea that we chose was not very problematic. There have been problems with communicating our ideas within the group, however it has ultimately been well planned and we were all confident about film day. An advantage in the pre production process was that our team learnt to listen to each other and we have worked well together. We worked well within our specific roles.

Victor: Director
Myself: Producer
Sophie: Cinematographer
Adam: Sound Engineer

Unfortunately this project has not come without its fair share of disadvantages. This was nearly everyone’s first time of doing a project like this and we found it hard finding research materials. Adam, however, did this last year and he helped us immensely which has helped the group to function faster. Overall the pre production process has been extremely positive.

Account of props and costumes required and where these will be sourced from

We only needed a knife and clothes which the actor wore. The environment in which we are filming is the forest. The dark and sinister forest symbolizes evil, which is reflected within the attacker chasing our victim. The knife is used for stabbing the victim. The clothes we chose for the actor was dark clothes in correlation to the foreboding atmosphere; we also realized that black moving through the forest was very visible.

Discussion of what kind of institution would produce your film and why

The kind of institution that would produce this kind of movie would be a small budget company as the film we are shooting would be a fairly low budget film. Examples of studios that we would use for this film would be Electric Studios and Lionsgate. Lionsgate is an option because the company has a history of recognized films such as American Psycho; it is also renowned for producing low budget films. We would also use Twisted Pictures which produced SAW and Miramax. Miramax also produced films such as: Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Heavenly Creatures and Shakespeare in Love; all very well-known films.

Our target audience

The majority of teenagers go into a film expecting to see something exciting not necessarily something that is of ‘quality’. For example, a group of victims getting killed in numerous different ways e.g. SAW is enough entertainment for the average teenage male. The amount of money that the franchise the film has made is a perfect example of how explicit violence, blood and gore is attractive to the teenage eye.

Account of how you then began the process of producing a written version of the technicalities on your storyboard

We created a story board and decided on a list of effective shots. We agreed the shots we used were relevant and would be easy to shot because we had a simple concept; a victim running through a forest being chased by an attacker. We considered that filming the chase sequence in the forest could be problematic because it could rain and make it easy to slip; however we decided that using the right equipment we could easily overcome any of these problems. We decided to have a good looking and well built man who would appeal as the victim and attacker because we had plenty of people we knew who fit the description. Also a good looking victim would inspire more sympathy and it would appear peculiar for the attacker to appear weak.

Account of our first production group meeting

We spent the lesson discussing our ideas for our opening sequence. We chose the simplest opening sequence; we were then able to discuss camera shots, props, actors, locations etc. and the accessibility of each.We decided that Victor’s idea was the easiest to go ahead with, as it only needed one location, the forest. Considering the fact that there are plenty of forests in the Surrey area, this was a fairly easy choice to make.

What is a horror film? - Thriller

A Horror Film serves many purposes:
1) Personal - The audience can identify with the fears and threats of the narrative using primal fears; for example darkness and mutilation. The audience envoy’s this because they can feel the thrill of danger from a safe distance.
2) Ideological - The implicit or explicit messages in the narrative. Themes of punishment/redemptions/revulsion at any subject which deviates from ‘acceptable’ thinking with textual messages (The ‘good girl’ surviving at the expense of her rebellious friend) and developing into more subtle 'fears' of strangers/hitchhikers/religion/power of science.
3) Financial/Industrial - without a doubt, one of the most profitable genres to continually exploit is horror. Horror franchises frequently stretch beyond other genres in terms of sequels, spin offs and re-makes because of the profit.

Storyboard: shot list and research

Our group consists of Adam, Victor and Sophie. We have chosen to use Victor’s idea as it was extremely simple yet effective and is frightening as it ends leaving the audience at a cliffhanger.

The opening sequence will begin with an establishing shot of a forest.
The camera would then drop down into the woods and we would be able to see the names of the cast, producer and director carved into the trees.
It would begin with the camera man running with the camera filming the actress, about the age of 18; this would give the impression that she is being chased.
He will begin to slow down because he is bleeding from his stomach.
He eventually falls to her knees and then onto her back.
He will be filmed from a high angle, as this will make her appear inferior as He looks up and sees a shadow standing over her holding a knife.
The audience is unable to see who it is.
There is a P.OV shot from the boy and we see that the figure is in fact himself.
This asks the audience to decide whether it is the boy's imagination.
He dies and the film cuts.
There will be a slash through the black and we will see the title of the film back lit through smoke.
We decided to film it in the forest near our school because it is easy, inexpensive and doesn’t require permission or traveling.
The forest will create an eerie and mysterious atmosphere if we film and light it correctly.
The shot angles we have chosen will manipulate the picture and will always make the girl look inferior and helpless.
It will also create an atmosphere of terror and chaos which will hopefully make the audience feel panic and fear.

We decided that we would probably film with a company like Artisan
Entertainment as in 1999's they made The Blair Witch Project. It had a small budget of $22,000 but made $248 million worldwide. It had the highest ratio of box office sales to production cost in American film making history.
It is also extremely similar to Victor’s idea; therefore if we promoted the film correctly, it would be very successful and make a profit.

Storyboard

We discussed issues for our storyboard from our shot list and what lighting we would use on the set at this point and if there was any dialogue in the shot. We also discussed who would create the storyboard. Victor and Sophie teamed up for the task as they had similar ideas about how the storyboard should be presented.

Target Audience

Our target audience is set for the younger generation as the characters are in their age group and they are fascinated and are growing up with new technologies. Therefore they are more open to accepting and considering new ideas such as cloning; which in this case poses a threat which asks the audience to question the dangers of science.

Film Institution

The institution we chose is the UK British Film because the location is of an old country house and forests which is more relevant to British citizens. Therefore British people are more likely to watch it because it correlates more to their surroundings.

Location

The only location we needed was a forest. We wanted a dense forest as it would be darker and it would have a more eerie atmosphere. We would also have after sound effects of the sound of someone running through trees.

Casting

We only needed one actor for our thriller so it was relatively easy to find someone. We decided we needed a boy with dark hair to make her look like a typical dark handsome hero. We decided we would use Dan Ash as he fitted the requirements and he was available at the time. We did not encounter any problems finding an actor. For the actor running away through the forest we decided to use the same actor to chase through the forest as it would add an interesting twist to the storyline. This would also be simpler and we would not interrupt someone else’s day.
